Dental Implants vs. Bridges: Which Tooth Replacement Option Is Right for You in St. Charles, MO?

Dentist in St. Charles, MO

Losing a tooth can feel overwhelming. Not only does it impact your smile, but it also affects how you eat, speak, and even how confident you feel. If you’ve recently lost a tooth – or know you’ll need one replaced soon – you’ve probably heard two common solutions: dental implants and dental bridges. Both options restore your smile and function, but which is right for you? Let’s break down the differences, benefits, and considerations so you can make the best choice for your needs.

Why Replacing Missing Teeth Matters

Some patients put off replacing missing teeth, especially if the gap isn’t visible when they smile. However, leaving a space untreated can cause long-term issues:

  • Neighboring teeth may shift into the gap, creating bite problems.
  • Without a tooth root, the jawbone begins to shrink.
  • Gaps can make eating harder and may lead to uneven wear.
  • Missing teeth may change your facial structure, causing a sunken or aged appearance.

The good news? Both dental implants and bridges offer excellent solutions to restore your smile.

What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is often considered the gold standard for tooth replacement. It consists of three parts:

  1. Implant post – a small titanium screw placed in the jawbone that acts as an artificial root.
  2. Abutment – a connector piece that attaches to the implant.
  3. Crown – a custom-made restoration that looks and functions like your natural tooth.

Implants fuse with your jawbone through a process called osseointegration, making them a secure, permanent option.

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Look, feel, and function like natural teeth.
  • Prevent bone loss by stimulating the jawbone.
  • Can last decades with proper care.
  • Do not affect neighboring teeth.
  • Easy to maintain with brushing and flossing.

Considerations for Implants

  • Require surgery and a healing period.
  • Treatment timeline can take several months.
  • Higher upfront cost compared to bridges.
  • Not ideal if you lack sufficient bone or have certain health conditions, though bone grafting may be possible.

What Are Dental Bridges?

A dental bridge literally “bridges” the gap left by a missing tooth. It typically involves placing crowns on the healthy teeth next to the gap, which then support an artificial tooth (called a pontic) in between.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

  • Faster treatment, usually completed in a few weeks.
  • More affordable upfront than implants.
  • Natural-looking results when made with porcelain or ceramic.
  • A good option if neighboring teeth already need crowns.

Considerations for Bridges

  • Requires reshaping the adjacent teeth for crowns.
  • Does not prevent bone loss beneath the missing tooth.
  • Typically lasts 10 to 15 years before replacement is needed.
  • Slightly harder to clean since flossing under the bridge is required.

Key Differences Between Implants and Bridges

  • Procedure: Implants are surgically placed in the jawbone, while bridges use crowns on neighboring teeth to support an artificial tooth.
  • Treatment time: Implants require a healing period of several months, while bridges are completed more quickly.
  • Longevity: Implants often last 20 years or more, while bridges may need replacement after 10–15 years.
  • Bone health: Implants preserve bone structure, while bridges do not.
  • Effect on other teeth: Implants do not impact surrounding teeth, while bridges require preparation of healthy adjacent teeth.
  • Cost: Implants are a higher initial investment, while bridges offer a lower upfront cost.

Which Option Is Right for You?

The best choice depends on your oral health, budget, and long-term goals.

Choose dental implants if:

  • You want the most natural and long-lasting solution.
  • You have healthy bone or are a candidate for bone grafting.
  • You want to maintain jawbone health and avoid affecting neighboring teeth.

Choose dental bridges if:

  • You prefer a faster, non-surgical solution.
  • You are seeking a more affordable upfront option.
  • Your neighboring teeth already need crowns.

During a consultation, Dr. Kevin Burgdorf will evaluate your smile, review X-rays, and discuss your goals to recommend the best treatment plan.

I needed an emergency appointment, I left a message on a Sunday and was contacted first thing Monday morning. They got me right in And right out. I was so nervous and scared because I haven’t always had the best luck with any dentist. That changed today! I Was surrounded by concern, positive information, and most of all the BEST dentist Hands down! I never felt a thing for a tooth extraction. I was so overwhelmed and when he said “we’re all set” All my emotions came pouring out, and it made me cry with joy that I was treated with such professionalism and kindness, and that goes for their staff as well. I will be back as a patient here.❤️

1st time going back to a dentist in around 30 years. Dr. Burgdorf and everyone on his staff was a pleasure to meet. This visit was x-rays, and to determine what I needed to have done. Everyone was friendly, courteous, and totally supportive and professional. A plan of care was decided on, and away we go.
